Steve Mackey (Pulp)

Bassist for the band Pulp in their Brit Pop glory daze (circa 1992-97), Steve Mackey was the consummate song player.

Providing the harmonic foundation for Messrs. Jarvis Cocker and guitarist Russell Senior, Mackey’s passages as rendered on a Fender Jazz and MusicMan grooved mightily. Among the few bands that lived up to the hype, Pulp were pop purveyors extraordinaire, and one would have thought they’d have lasted a lot longer but…such is rock and roll.

Following his tenure in said band, Mackey, who was also a composer, worked as a mixing engineer / producer with Florence and the Machine, M.I.A. and Arcade Fire, among others.  Steve occasionally collaborated with his ex-mates on various projects including Weird Sisters with Pulp pontiff Jarvis Cocker.

Andy Bell (Oasis, Ride)

By Tom Semioli

Aside from his highly acclaimed tenure in Ride as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist – Andy Bell helmed the bass chair for Oasis following Guigsy’s sack, and later, for Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye.

Essentially a riff and roots player, Bell kept his head down, avoided conflict, collected his cheques, and was the only member of the brothers Gallagher gang that composed songs that didn’t sound as if they were lifted from Lennon outtakes such as “The Nature of Reality,” “Turn Up the Sun,” and “Keep the Dream Alive”  among others.

Damon Minchella (Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller, The Who)

Behold Brit Pop Royalty!

A founding member of Ocean Colour Scene, Damon Minchella is a purveyor of hazy, hypnotic grooves which he plies on his battered Fender Jazz with a reverence for psychedelia, baroque pop, and classic rock.

In addition to his work with OCS (five Top 5 UK slabs, fifteen Top 20 UK singles the last time I counted…) Damon also anchored Paul Weller’s band for a dozen years, and appeared with The Who at Live 8.

Following a serious hand injury, which he as fully recovered from, Michella now turns to academia, teaching a pop music course at The University of South Wales.
